Ballroom Wedding at the Dallas Petroleum Club, Dallas, TX

I am told that this was the very first wedding ever held at the Dallas Petroleum Club. Whether that’s fully true or not I can’t be sure, but it was a stunning backdrop for Jody and Will’s wedding celebration. Will told me they hadn’t wanted to do videography at all - most options they’d seen were too cookie-cutter, predictable, template based approaches. I also knew that they weren’t particularly interested in all of the “traditional” things you generally see in wedding films - loads of portraiture, poses, slow motion, etc…I was actually booked about 3 weeks before their wedding after they had seen a teaser film I’d made for another couple that they were friends with.

This is a wedding film…but there’s a segment in the early parts of this one that feel more like a comedy. Will and his friends took to the golf course and I followed along capturing as much as I could along the way. This film, to me, completely exemplifies the need for natural audio. There were so many one-liners and off-the-cuff jokes, and even a bathroom break on the golf course that I discerningly tried to capture. There are no rules. I make films with the ingredients given to me, and this one was loaded.

They had also booked my Well Wishes camera and I used it extensively in this film. I’ll be totally honest - I was nervous about this wedding while we were shooting it. I had very little couple portraiture (couple wasn’t really feeling posed stuff), and traditionally that’s one of the things a lot of filmmakers have built their product on. Will really enjoyed the fly on the wall approach where we were mostly candid observers, and truthfully this film taught me a lot about how to trust the process. I’m not here to make you do anything, I’m here to capture you being yourself.
