Wedding at McGovern Centennial Gardens, Houston TX

Tia & Jauq told me from the outside that they wanted to do everything with excellence. They threw a garden party in the Houston Museum District under the stars, inviting family and friends from all over to celebrate with them, play casino games on the garden lawn and dance the night away. It’s Houston in September, so it was hot. But can I tell you these two were not only bringing excellence in their wedding celebrations, but they themselves were such a joy to work with. Their first look is still one of my favorite moments.

Another aspect of excellence and intention was how they incorporated so much ritual and meaning into their celebration. Names of ancestors were chanted throughout the garden in unison as a way to remember all those who have come before, and all those who sacrificed so that Tia and Jauq could become who they are today. It was humbling. It was humbling because while it wasn’t my story, I was invited in to tell their story, which is perhaps the greatest gift I can receive as a filmmaker.

I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed them as people. They had me rolling laughing, in tears listening to their vows and most important inspired by just watching them love and care for each other. This film is a highlight for me.
